Asian Luxury Market Sparkles

I should be used to it by now, but I am always amazed at the conspicuous display of wealth whenever I travel to Asia. The signs of wealth are everywhere.

I see more people drinking $3 cups of Starbucks coffee in Shanghai than I see in Seattle. I see more ladies clutching expensive Louis Vuitton handbags in Beijing than in Boston. I see more iPods and iPhones in Hong Kong than in Houston. And I see more $200,000 Bentleys on the streets of Wuhan than in Palm Beach, Florida.

The reason is simple: Asians have the money to spend, and they absolutely love western luxury goods. According to Asian consultant Bain & Company, the future for luxury goods retailers in Asia has never been brighter. Bain & Company just updated its outlook for the luxury goods sector, and it's expecting big things this year.

Bain expects sales of luxury goods high-end apparel, accessories, watches, and jewelry to hit $236 billion in 2010, up from $214 billion in 2009.

"After the crisis a new luxury era is emerging," Bain said.

In a separate study, Altagamma, the Italian luxury trade group, said it expects the luxury goods industry's profits to increase by 15% in 2011.

"In 2011 we are going to witness even better growth. Global consumption in 2011 should be significantly close to the record levels of 2007," the group said.

Luxury goods sales in China are expected to increase by 30% to $12.8 billion, while sales in the entire Asia-Pacific region will grow by 22%. Sales in stores directly operated by makers of luxury goods will jump by 20%, and Bain expects as many as 350 new stores to be opened by the end of 2010 in Asia.

and Tommy Hilfiger has done it for more than 25 years

Hilfiger is marking 25 years of his namesake brand this fall, celebrating with a splashy show during Fashion Week, tailgate parties and anniversary products, but his career is, in fact, longer than that: He's had a fashion gig since high school when he decided Elmira, N.Y., needed a denim store to keep up with the 1960s rock-star trends.

He opened People's Place catering to the local college crowd and everyone headed to Woodstock, and took out ads in the local newspaper boasting the best bell-bottoms and red fox jackets for "foxy" ladies. He'd promote sales as "savings for swingers."

"I wanted to build a business around all this pop culture," says Hilfiger, who ticks off music, movies, celebrity and art as the long-term common threads in his signature look that has evolved through phases of hippie, preppy, Americana and glitzy influences. Moving with the times doesn't make him or his brand inconsistent, says Hilfiger. On the contrary, he explains, it gives his collection and its customers an interesting, vibrant lifestyle that adopts more than just one aesthetic.

The style icons he admires — for their personal looks as well as their ability to tap the zeitgeist — range from Norman Rockwell to the Beatles, from Marilyn Monroe to Beyonce. He shows off just what a fan he is of the big picture around him in a new ultra-luxe $550 book published by Assouline that is, essentially, Hilfiger's scrapbook.

where he showed his first bridal collection at Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier

Kevan Hall, arguably L.A.'s top design talent, brought his signature glamorous red carpet sensibility and couture-level craftsmanship to New York on Friday, Oct. 15, where he showed his first bridal collection at Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier.

"I'd been doing so many celebrity weddings and getting calls and requests to do special things for girls and socialites and royals," said Hall, "so I thought, well, why don't we actually tie a real bridal collection together and give people an opportunity to have it and enjoy it for a really special day."

Hall's eveningwear has been worn by the cream of the crop of Hollywood's elite, including Felicity Huffman, Vivica A. Fox, Virginia Madsen, Garcelle Beauvais, Debra Messing and Renee Zellweger.

Hall, who launched his label, Kevan Hall Couture, in L.A. in 1982 with his wife and partner Deborah Hall, said he decided to launch this collection in New York during the semi-annual bridal market week because "there's really no other market, besides Europe, where you can really get that kind of exposure for a collection."

Featuring bridal gowns with names like "Harlow," "Marilyn," "Halle" and "Audrey," Hall referenced stars past and present in dresses that were unapologetically glamorous, from a sleek '30s screen siren silk crepe bias-cut gown with crystal-encrusted straps to an architectural origami pleated bodice with an Art Deco bent.

"I was thinking of girls who at this point want to look like celebrities, like they're going to the Oscar's, like they're going to the Emmy's," said Hall. "I'm hoping to style icons."

The family behind storied French scarf and bag maker

The family behind storied French scarf and bag maker Hermes says it is "perfectly unified" and determined to keep control after rival luxury goods group LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton scooped up a big stake in the company last week.

In a statement Monday, the Hermes family called LVMH's action "unsolicited," after the luxury giant bought a 14.2 percent stake in the Hermes International holding company.

The Hermes family owns 75 percent of the company, with the remainder listed on the Paris stock exchange.

LVMH said Saturday it intends to exercise options that will raise its stake in Hermes to 17.1 percent.

LVMH is the parent of Hermes' crosstown bag-making rival Louis Vuitton and scores of other high-end liquor, jewelry and clothing labels.

Leather trousers can never be just about fashion

If you are female and reading this then, right now, there is probably at least a tiny part of you that is already lusting after a pair of Isabel Marant cropped red leather trousers. No matter that you can't afford them (they retail at around £1,500). Never mind, also, that you couldn't get hold of a pair even if you had the cash (most sizes are sold out on Net-a-Porter.com, and Matches has a waiting list). Never mind the disparity between how you might look in them and how Kate Moss looks in the advert, or the fact that even if you managed to get hold of them and get into them, you might struggle to find a suitable moment to wear them. Leather trousers are the look of the moment. It might be a moment of madness, but it's a moment nonetheless.

Last week, Victoria Beckham was photographed in the red Marant trousers, while Gemma Arterton was snapped in the black version. In the video for Country Strong, the single from her upcoming film, Gwyneth Paltrow is wearing Marant leather trousers with a silky grey Monroe tank and Stella McCartney stilettos. Halle Berry has been spotted in a charcoal grey pair of leathers; Elle Macpherson wears a red pair on the school run. Kate Moss, inevitably, was first, having worn a Balmain pair of luxe motorcycle-style leather trousers this year and last.

Leather trousers can never be just about fashion. There is, as Vernon delicately puts it, "a duality in the way men and women respond to them. To women it's a fashion thing, but to men they are flagrantly sexual." Buttolph agrees. "Well, my boyfriend really likes them. Really, really likes them," she tells me when I ask how people react to the look. But leather trousers are not just risque, they are risky as well. "There is a mutton dressed as lamb issue," says Buttolph. Vernon admits she was "tentative at first, because I was worried about looking a bit 90s supermodel turned mum".

Bustle takes the business out of suits and imbues the look with fun

Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow, the creators of Bustle, never take themselves - or their clothes - too seriously, and their show on Monday night at LG Fashion Week proved this yet again.

Setting the stage with rock band Die Mannequin at the rear of the runway, the show kicked off with what seemed to be the lead singer spinning around and strutting his stuff, revealing that he was, in fact, one of the line's many models.

Exploding in pastel hues of purples, greens, blues and pinks set against whites and greys, the look was decidedly fun, not fussy. The jackets were cut both single- and double-breasted, and the extensive line allowed for so many options that it was easy to imagine mixing and matching them right backstage.

The designers had noted their admiration for Japan's willingness to experiment with fabrics, and this could be seen in the materials that ranged from standard wools to jeans crafted from a soft cotton to a suit jacket that appeared to double as a raincoat. One particular suit came in an iridescent fabric and colour that could only be described as robot-like.

Los Angeles has slowly and steadfastly been nurturing talent of its own

When we think of Fashion Week, other major metropolitan cities like Milan, Paris, London, and NYC immediately come to mind. It's because those cities feature the biggest names in fashion; the moneymakers, the labels that everyone knows. Think Chanel, Versace, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney.

Over the years, Los Angeles has slowly and steadfastly been nurturing talent of its own. LA has served as a launching pad for the careers of many designers and while it may not feature the heavy hitters, it does boast talent like Rodarte, Trina Turk, C&C, and serves as home to uber-hipster retailer American Apparel.

And as any underdog does, the city fights on to gain national and worldwide respect in its industry. Each year has seen gains and losses, fueled by a partnership from IMG and Smashbox that ended in October of 2008. With another momentary set-back after major supporter GenArt officially closed shop, LAFW has faced obstacles in securing sponsors to run a well-produced, highly-anticipated week-long run of fashion.

As Milan Fashion Week continues its run of the Spring 2011 collections

As Milan Fashion Week continues its run of the Spring 2011 collections, we're noticing a continuation of the color explosion that we saw at the likes of Marc Jacobs, Peter Som, and L.A.M.B. during the New York shows.

Gucci was particularly vibrant with sharp suits and dresses with peek-a-boo cutouts in hues of amber, aqua, and purple. Brights were not a problem at Prada either, where the brand's matriarch Miuccia Prada encouraged individualism with tops adorned with monkey prints. (Take apart this collection and you'll actually unearth several wearable pieces.)

Moschino was filled with urban cowgirls, while Versace featured long-fringe gowns. (They, too, also opted for some peep-worthy slits in tight body-con dresses.)

Not every designer focused on Roy G. Biv ready-to-wear. Alberta Ferretti opted for a more ethereal approach with long wispy chiffon dresses and gowns in subtle shades.

he truly global top-tier luxury brands are surging in China

As the luxury industry enters the last quarter of 2010 and prepares for 2011, executives are grateful for what could have been a worse year considering the state of the world's economy. The truly global top-tier luxury brands are surging in China, while holding their own in the US, Japan, and Europe. Leading public companies have done much better than privately-owned brands by using their heritage, innovation, and resources to gain market share. Many family-owned European brands, rich with history but lacking innovation, have suffered and are desperately looking for capital. Overall, the industry has seen tepid growth; this trend is likely to continue for the next three years unless some unforeseen, and highly unlikely, positive event occurs and saves the global economy.

Meanwhile, many luxury executives have not been standing still. Stripped of its facade by the combination of a severe recession and the dawning of the age of transparency, the luxury industry has been fighting hard to maintain its relevancy. Behind the scenes, several companies have already conducted some direly needed soul-searching that has begun to pay off.

she is really a fashion goddess

Despite what seems to be an obvious attempt to walk the line in the opposite direction of her female peers, Angelina’s fashion choices have panned out. She is hailed as a somewhat accidental fashion goddess, with some innovative and creative wardrobe pairings. For example, while colors were in style last year, Angelina showed up to major events in black, her tattoos and limited jewelry leading the way.

Now, as a mother of several children, her casual clothing has taken on a more practical look. Her handbags are now part diaper bag, and her heels are now low enough to chase after run-away children at the park. She keeps a busy, hectic schedule juggling her work, her family and her hot-shot boyfriend. She manages to look good in simple, old-fashioned clothes like denim and white T-shirts, with an emphasis on traditional sunglasses to give her a retro and yet modern look.

Fashion to me is art and I love creative talents in all its forms

I was feeling slighted, somewhat like the lone ranger. I looked about to the promenade and saw people passing by in designer clothing, beautiful replica hermes handbags, and in general stuff that I sometimes want. Not that people shouldn't have nice things and I was not one bit jealous for those walking by, but for myself, from my personal pitfalls of the past- A designer pair of jeans or a Gucci bag is not worth having- if, my brother is in need of rice. Perhaps that is why, I've not been blessed with money for I tend to lack willpower with it and instead my blessing is more with empathy, sympathy, and a station in life that while comfortable, keeps me accountable for every cent I spend.

I sometimes write about fashion. Fashion to me is art and I love creative talents in all its forms. I love the look of a well built handbag and a great pair of jeans, or a Horchow vanity seat fit for a princess. I'm just a different kind of princess, that's all. Someday, in Heaven I will sit next to the lamb and lion. The lion won't eat me and I won't eat the lamb, and I'll say farewell to this dog eat dog world. Perhaps I'll sit on something heavenly comfortable and I will not have to nag my way to a good lunch. I'll be given a new body and perspective in a land so glorious that it will be, oh yes, that's right Heaven.
