The family behind storied French scarf and bag maker

The family behind storied French scarf and bag maker Hermes says it is "perfectly unified" and determined to keep control after rival luxury goods group LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton scooped up a big stake in the company last week.

In a statement Monday, the Hermes family called LVMH's action "unsolicited," after the luxury giant bought a 14.2 percent stake in the Hermes International holding company.

The Hermes family owns 75 percent of the company, with the remainder listed on the Paris stock exchange.

LVMH said Saturday it intends to exercise options that will raise its stake in Hermes to 17.1 percent.

LVMH is the parent of Hermes' crosstown bag-making rival Louis Vuitton and scores of other high-end liquor, jewelry and clothing labels.
